ATTENTION ALL WRITERS: A Fully Sick Travel Writing Internship Is Up For Grabs

By Sophie Nicolas (former Global Hobo intern)

The rumours are true, Stoke Travel and Global Hobo are teaming up this year to bring you one epic travel writing internship held in Spain! One month of intensive writing workshops, learning from the best of the best, travelling the beautiful Spanish countryside and making friends for life. And the best part? Uni students can get credit for it. That’s right, as well as throwing the wildest parties and festivals, we’re all about that education too. So have a read of what it’s all about and why you should drop everything and join us for the best summer of your life.

Let us Take You To:

Bali

Global Hobo has spoilt you with three locations you can choose from. Why not join us in Bali? With the crystal blue sea at your doorstep, tropical rainforests, caves to explore and a thriving nightlife. Get immersed in Bali’s pop culture industry with daily writing workshops and coconuts galore.

Tokyo

We think every twenty-something should experience Tokyo at least once. Learn how to speak Japanese, eat the best ramen in the world and visit ancient temples. Go shopping in Harajuku town, take weekend trips to far away places or enjoy an authentic cooking class. Oh, and don’t forget to try the sake.

Spain

Become a Stoke-hobo with our very first internship held in Spain. Visit Barcelona, an artistic and vibrant city that is sure to ignite a few creative sparks. Madrid, Valencia, San Sebastian and many more are cities on our bucket list, you’ll get to see them all.   Drink your weight in red sangria, bathe in the sun, swim in rivers and marvel at the beautiful architecture that Spain is known for.

Why You’ll love it

You’ll Be Hustling Everyday

Writing classes and language classes. We’re not going to lie, your day will be looking super full, you’ll be getting bang for your buck for sure! The good part is that you’ll have afternoons and evenings free with your new friends.

Your mentors are the best in the industry, some of them having worked with VICE Australia, The ABC, Culture Trip and our very own Stoke Travel to name a few. By the time the workshops are through, you’ll be more comfortable pitching to an editor, writing in Global Hobo’s tone of voice, and your editing and story narrative skills will have improved. By the end of the trip, you will have become a published writer.

Strangers Become Family

Something amazing happens when a bunch of young and reckless people travel together. Being thrown headfirst into this big scary world can be daunting, and when you fall head first together, it’s a bonding experience you will take with you for the rest of your life.

I did the Tokyo internship in 2017, and we still have our original group chats going strong. The people you meet will change you, whether you realize it or not. Get ready for a whole lot of soul searching, ‘finding yourself” and all that other crap.

You Learn To Rely On Yourself

You miss your flight, you lose your passport, you get locked out of your bank and it takes them a week and a half to send you the pin code (I’m still salty about it). Point is, you’ll experience all kinds of setbacks during your travels, and you’ll learn how to deal with it without having a panic attack. Shit happens, you keep calm, you fix it, learn from it and move on.

You’ll Get a Damn Good Feeding

Wherever you choose to travel, the food in each country will challenge your tastebuds and maybe send you out of your comfort zone. For Japan, the Okonomiyaki bar, where you can make it yourself on the makeshift grill, is a great way to bond with your new roomies.

Or why not go to a tapas bar in Barcelona, order a giant paella and try some of the finest wine in Spain. In Bali, you’ll have the best nasi goreng of your life, share it over some cheap and potent cocktails and you’ve got yourself a good night!

You’ll Learn How To Be Alone But Not Lonely

Don’t let the thought of travelling alone stop you!  A lot of the interns have never travelled alone, but you’ll meet your sick new roomies and find out that they’re amazing, and wonder what all the worry was about.

Travelling alone is liberating, scary, incredible, and you learn so much about yourself and how you handle tricky situations. For example, my phone died on my first day on the way to my writing workshop so I had no idea where I was going. But did I panic? Absolutely. I used the very little Japanese I knew to ask the locals and figure out Tokyo’s confusing and insane train stations. After three wrong trains later,  I showed up to class 2 hours late and everyone was leaving. But I was pretty proud of myself for getting there on my own, with only two mental breakdowns.

Your resume is going to be THE SHIT

It’s no secret that internships look great on resumes, but with Global Hobo you get a competitive edge. It shows you’ve left your hometown, your safe bubble and lived in a different country with different customs. Employers will recognise the skill of learning a new language, the importance of problem-solving skills and that you can easily adapt to new environments. Not to mention they’ll see you were taught by the best mentors around, and be blown away by your media industry knowledge!

Two years ago I completed my Global Hobo internship, and since then I’ve become a confident freelance writer, have started my own website and have gotten a writing job with Stoke Travel, just because I had Global Hobo on my resume.

You decide what you get out of this experience, but I promise that if you really want to make it into the travel writing industry, your first step should be with us.

Apply now and join us in Spain for a life-changing summer of friends, travel and writing!

Our Drinking Guide to Oktoberfest

Perhaps you’ve heard of Oktoberfest – it’s only the biggest and best beer festival in the world. Fourteen beer tents and six million people drinking more than seven million litres of beer (this stat is unimpressive, considering that at our campsite alone last year, with 8000 travellers went through 120,000 litres…). They serve the best beer in the world, brewed according to German Purity Laws, which attracts beer lovers and party animals alike. And where there’s alcohol, there Stoke Travel in the middle of it all, beer funnel at the ready and unlimited wine and beer on tap. So, from the self-proclaimed Oktoberfest experts, here is a drinking guide to getting appropriately shitfaced at Oktoberfest.

Pre-Game Hard

If you don’t pre-drink for Oktoberfest, what are you even doing? Beers are expensive, 12 euros a Maß (pronounced mah-ss) to be exact. Not to mention that the percentage in German beer is unusually high, so one mass, which is one litre of beer, will be enough to keep you adequately tipsy throughout the day. You can pre-drink at our campsite, where you can get unlimited beer and wine for 10 euros. But pace yo’self fool, you don’t want to pass out before you reach the beer tents, we’ll tease you endlessly and you’ll earn yourself a trip to Puke Hill

What are Oktoberfest beers?

These are not just ordinary run-of-the-mill, regular Joe beers. Oh no, these are a deadly and delicious combination of Munich’s six favourite breweries. They’re more delicious and way stronger than what you’re used to. One drink will get you buzzed, two drinks will get you chatting up the barmaid, three drinks and you’ll be dancing on the tables, and by the fourth, you’re well into pissing on yourself territory, and you might be seeing those bratwursts that you ate earlier.

The beer is what makes the festival and they definitely live up to their reputation. The alcohol content is higher, so it’s a guaranteed good time in an oversized not-so-novelty glass. The beers may be lethal but you won’t be experiencing your typical hangover the next day (no promises though). The German Purity Laws mean that the beers are clean, no bad crap in it that will make you feel icky the next morning. (But we reckon if you’re not hungover or at least still drunk the next day, you didn’t go hard enough.)

Do you have to drink beer?

Even if you’re not a beer lover, we’d still recommend at least trying the beer, just to say you’ve done it. It is Oktoberfest after all, and you may have tried beer in your home country, but never authentic German beer. But if you’re still not a keen bean, here are some other options to wet your whistle.

  • There’s Wine At Oktoberfest?
You can still go to Oktoberfest and not drink beer, you might get a few funny looks though. There’s a wine tent, and it ain’t cheap, but what at Oktoberfest is? Glasses of wine starting at around 12 euros is enough to clean out that wallet.

  • What Exactly Is A Radler?
What we would call a “shandy” or “a weak as piss beer”. It’s basically beer and lemonade which makes for a refreshing bevvie, but won’t do much for you in the “getting smashed” department.

  • Start The Day With Irish Coffee
Some of the tents are famous for their strong Irish Coffee that will leave you feeling lucky like the Irish. Other spirits and schnapps are of course at your disposal.

What’s Oktoberfest like?

Fucking mental / expensive / rowdy / a cultural experience. It’s not just a bunch of drunk people spewing by the tents and downing one-litre pints in 15 seconds. I mean, it kind of is, but it’s also an insight to German culture, and where people from all over the world can come together over a bevvie and a bratwurst.

The lines to Oktoberfest can be extensive and waiting for a long time with hundreds of people can make you grumpy. But when you finally get into the hall, and get served that first delicious beer, you’ll be having the time of your life. It’s important to note that you won’t get served beer unless you’re sitting at a table. People will usually sidle up the benches to let you in, now that’s how friendships are made!

There’s traditional Bavarian music at each beer tent that will have you and your group singing merrily and completely out of tune. Sometimes you can spend the whole day in just one tent because you’re having such a good time. Time really does fly when you’re off your face.

And Finally, Finish the Festivities With a Visit to Puke Hill

So this isn’t an “official” puke hill, but it’s what the locals have decided is a place for a good ol’ fashioned tack yack. You’ll see heaps of drunk people in lederhosen stumbling up said hill to relieve themselves so they can smash back another mass of that deadly brew. During the rest of the year, it’s actually a beautiful little park, but come festival season it’s the perfect place for die Bierleichen, which literally means “beer corpses”, to take a quick break before stumbling back into the tents.

So that was our insider, not so responsible, please-don’t-show-your-mum-this guide to getting wrecked at Oktoberfest. Join us on our epic Stoketober camping grounds to get even more loose at our after-party, and knock back a few cold ones at our open bar.

Eight Different Trips To Suit Your Travel Style

Our Stoke summer itinerary is so jam packed with festivals, concerts and surf camps you don’t know where to start and what to try first. We get it, you only get one summer a year and you want to do it right. That’s why we took the liberty of compiling a list of our favourite packages for you to choose from, based on what kind of trip you’re looking for.

For the Sophisticated Alcoholic – San Vino Wine Fight

It’s a ferocious battle above the vineyards of La Rioja, Spain, fought with water guns, hoses, buckets, cups and pretty much anything you can get your hands on that can carry or throw wine. Don’t worry, wine lovers, it’s not a waste! This is the wine that wasn’t good enough to be bottled, so we might as well get wrecked from it since it would’ve gone to vinegar anyway. The best part? You can get absolutely shit faced and no one will judge because it’s a “unique travelling experience”. Join us for our party before and after the battle in our big grassy campsite. Line your stomach with our chef-cooked breakfast and dinners and listen to some live tunes from international bands and DJ’s. Of course, unlimited beer and sangria is at your disposal. We would say drink responsibly, but when some of the world’s best – and cheapest – red wine come out of the area are you gunna?

If You Crave Death and Destruction- Running with the Bulls

For those thrill seekers out there, it doesn’t get more exciting than running with the bulls in San Fermin. To the locals, it is so much more than a dangerous bull run, it’s wild street parties, delicious food, litres upon litres of sangria and a festival to remember (or not to remember, depending on how much you drink). Nothing will beat this once in a lifetime experience of being chased through the streets by a raging bull, coming out the other end in one piece and then celebrating in the street festival like a hero. Yeah, you might get a few scratches, get trampled or otherwise impaled, but that’s what makes it so exciting! You might want to buy some health insurance though.

If You Want to Take a Load of Drugs and Dance Your Heart Out- Stoked in The Park Pamplona

The rumours are true, Dune Rats are playing at Stoked in The Park this summer in Spain! We’re set up on a large, grassy and beautiful campsite and we’ve created an adult playground for all music lovers to listen to some live tunes. Not to mention the street fiesta that goes on all day and all night. Stoked in the Park is centred around the festival that hosts the famous bull run, but if that’s not your thing, we got you covered. Sun-soaked days, pool parties, unlimited sangria and a list of incredible bands that play tunes and let you dance until you crawl back into your tent, ready to do it all again tomorrow.  But that’s not all! Team sports, street parties, places to chill out and camping in the beautiful Spanish countryside. Are you sold yet?

If You Just Want a Good Feed – La Tomatina

What better way to have a culinary experience than La Tomatina – the biggest food fight in the world! Spain’s famous tomato battle is fought in the streets of Buñol where you can pelt soft and squished tomatoes at strangers and get away with it. You’ll be staying on our beach side campsite off the coast of Valencia, where you can enjoy all the shops, restaurants and sights the town has to offer. Treat your tastebuds to our “foreplay party” the night before the fight, where you can scoff down giant paellas and wash it all down with our unlimited beer and sangria. Don’t forget to hit the pool or playing some of our beach games before getting red and bloody at La Tomatina.

If Beer and Camping is Your Thing – Springfest

More commonly known as Oktoberfest’s cooler but lesser known little sister, Springfest mimics the famous festival on a smaller and more intimate scale. If you love sleeping in tents, making new friends and drinking the best beer in the world, you’ll love our Spring Fest Package held in Munich. With massive beer tents loaded with delicious German food, live music and lederhosen as far as the eye can see, you’ll be spending your days either chilling on the campsite while chatting to the locals or destroying your liver in the beer hall.

You can choose from twin share or solo tents packed with mattresses and sleeping bags. Love a bit of luxury? Who doesn’t! Take a look at our Glamping option to add a layer of comfort in your own private tepee.

For the Beach Bums – Costa Brava Beach Camp

Join us this summer in Barcelona for endless sun-filled days surfing on first-class beaches, energising yoga in the mornings and wild parties at night. What more could you want? Not sold yet? Let us paint a picture of your day. You’ll typically wake up early to a delicious home-made breakfast, followed by a bit of morning beach yoga to start your day. Swim in the crystal blue ocean, play some volleyball on the shore, make out with a beautiful Spanish guy or even just catch a tan before cracking open a beer with your new amigos. Water sports, day trips and drinking games… the day is yours for the taking and there is always something to do in Barcelona! Camping or glamping, we got it all. You’ll be watching the sunset over the ocean from your beachside tent.

When You Want To Treat Yo Self (Even if You’ve Done Nothing to Deserve a Treat)- Stoke Retreats

Get all zen and stuff with our relaxing retreats held in Ibiza, Tenerife or San Sebastian. That’s right, as well as partying hard we also give you a chance to give your poor liver a break with our health and well-being retreats. We’re thoughtful like that.

Your happiness is the priority here, with daily morning yoga, meditation, wholesome homemade foods and lazy days on the beach soaking up the sun. With this package, everything is organised for you so you don’t have to stress about a thing. There are no restrictions on your day, the retreat is whatever it may mean to you. Healthy meals, fitness classes, outdoor sports and educational workshops, it’s all about making you feel fantastic – physically and mentally.

If You Want to Become a Travel Writer and Make Friends for Life – Travel Writing Retreat

Are you a budding writer who wants to get their name out there in the big wide web? Well lucky for you Stoke Travel is teaming up with Global Hobo for a once in a lifetime writers retreat right here in Spain. Spend the summer in our daily writing workshops learning how to make newsworthy articles, send pitches to an editor, speak mediocre Spanish and refining your writing skills.

But don’t worry, we play hard too. You’ll have time for sightseeing, day trips, eating great food and drinking all the wine you can handle while experiencing the thriving nightlife. For university students, good news! This internship can be used as credit for an Australian or international university degree.

Send us a cover letter, story,  an interpretive rain dance, anything that will get you noticed! For more info visit here to see how you can become the next Stoke-hobo…good luck!

How To Make Some Side Hustle While You’re On The Road

So you’re travelling abroad, living out of a suitcase and living the dream. When suddenly you’re at a rooftop bar in Barcelona and your card declines. Could it be the double shot G&Ts you’ve been having? Nah, you’ve obviously been robbed. Either way, you’re officially a broke-ass bitch, welcome to the club! I’ve had to make some cheeky side hustles and under the table money while travelling more than once. So get ready to take some notes and let us lay some wisdom on ya. Here are some ways you can make a quick buck.

Sell Your Body

Nah we’re just kidding…unless you want to, no judgement here. With our tips, no body parts need to be loaned or given away so you can relax on that! Our first tip is actually teaching English. Yeah, yeah we get it, these days you need to be TEFL certified to teach, but we’re broke and can’t afford that shit, and there are ways to teach without it. Start by asking around at the nearby universities. Put up flyers around campus and make it a bit cheaper than the usual rate. Students are broke too, so they’re more likely to choose the cheaper option. Use Gumtree or Indeed and put up an ad for free, don’t be afraid to ask your local café if you can hang a flyer on the pinboard. Be smart in the way you advertise and we guarantee you’ll get a student.

Blog Writing

If you can write then you can make money from it. Plenty of companies and blogs will pay for your travel stories, but don’t just write about My time in Europe – make it fit the niche and tone of voice of the company. Put a unique spin on it and make it interesting. That’s how you get media companies to pick up on your writing. The usual amount is about $30 – $40 per article, more if you’re lucky. You defs won’t get rich this way, but it’s a good bit of booze money and feels good to have that extra cash flow, even if it’s not that much.

Sell Your Junk

Odds are you don’t need half as much stuff you think you do. If your suitcase is bursting at the seams and you are lugging it around like it’s dead weight, it’s time to sell. Gumtree, carousel app and even friends will give you some cash for your junk. Jewellery, shoes, clothes, trust us you don’t need fourteen shirts. One time I even sold my used underwear in Japan for thirty bucks (long story). Part with what you can and watch the cash roll in.

Become a Yoga Instructor

Do you like being all zen and stuff? Then why not host your own yoga class in each city you visit? You can charge $10 – $15 per person (or maybe more?) and choose your own times. You don’t need to be a certified yoga instructor either, it does make it harder to get a job in a studio, but if you wanted to choose a place on the beach or in the park, you’re good to go! Your students won’t care if you are not even a real yoga teacher, they just want to say hello to the sun and downward facing dog or whatever.

Hostel work

This is probably the best option for travellers. Short flexible hours, friendly people and being able to connect with fellow dirty travellers and globe roamers like yourself. The work isn’t too difficult but certainly not glamorous. Changing bed sheets, sweeping floors, cleaning toilets and then you’ve got the rest of the day to do your own thing! Yeah, you might have to clean up the odd vomit or two from the party travellers, but you might make some friends with them too!

House/Pet/Babysitting

When people go on holiday and need someone to look after their house, who better to do it than a random stranger off the street they don’t know! There are sites like this one that will let you house and pet sit for a few cash monies. Do you have childcare experience? Parents advertise on Gumtree all the time, maybe for one night or one week, depends how much they hate their kids. They usually ask for a police clearance or some kind of experience with kids.

Sell Your Used Underwear (No, seriously)

Yes ladies, this is a thing. If you’re comfortable with selling your used underwear (yes, it must be used) then you can actually make some bank. In Japan, this is a big thing that some travellers do. You go to an adult store, hand over your underwear in a ziplock bag and get about 30 bucks each. You can get even more on some websites that bid on them, you can even make up to $200! Don’t be shy, head on to eBay and see what’s out there.
