Shit Hot Tomato Recipe

Hey remember that bit in A Series Of Unfortunate Events where the Baudelaire kids make pasta puttanesca instead of roast beef? Turns out pasta puttanesca not only makes Count Olaf angry but it’s also associated with prostitutes. Apparently they were into it because it could be cooked quickly between clients and it also smells pretty good, which attracted clients. Could be true, could be total puttana. Either way, here’s a recipe for it.

What You’ll Need

–       Spaghetti (as much as you can eat)

–       Olive oil (2 tbls)

–       Onion (1)

–       Garlic (6 cloves)

–       Tomato paste (2 tbls)

–       Tinned tomatoes (1 tin)

–       Capers (2 tbls)

–       Anchovies (1 can)

–       Olives (couple fist fulls)

–       Parmesan (the more cheese the better)

–       Salt / pepper / chilli (whatever you’re into)

–       Fresh tomatoes (as many as you can carry)

How To Cook It

  1. Heat up some olive oil on a pan,
  2. Add the onion, garlic, salt and pepper and stir it till its soft,
  3. Add the anchovies and wait for them to dissolve – which they do, it’s very disconcerting to see a creature dissolve,
  4. Stir in the tomato paste and chilli for a bit,
  5. Chuck in the tomato paste, capers and olives,
  6. Cover the pot and let it simmer till it’s all yummy and saucy,
  7. Cook the pasta.

Finishing touches

  1. Put the sauce on the pasta,
  2. Put the parmesan on the pasta,
  3. Eat the pasta puttanesca,
  4. Throw the fresh tomatoes at people in the streets of Valencia.

Six more tattoos that you’ll find on at least one person at every hostel you stay, ever.

We recently posted an article called, The tattoos you’ll see in every hostel, but there are just so many of them that we couldn’t fit them all in on the first one, so here’s round two.

Sun And Moon

Worn by those with a deep connection to the universe and everything in it – they dreadlocked their hair too but realise not everyone knows the spiritual meaning behind this cultural appropriation/hairstyle, so they needed something a little more obvious as back up. More than likely also wearing rings and an annoying amount of bracelets from urban outfitters.

Dream catcher

Dream catchers are believed to have been created by a mystical protective spider woman. They’re hung above children’s beds so that the good dreams in the air can be caught and dripped down the feathers into the children’s minds and the bad dreams can be caught up in the string and burnt by the day light. Its an old and very lovely belief of the Native American people. People who not only have to deal with being shoved aside in their own country but who also have to watch basic bitches pick and choose the most fashionable parts of the Native American culture to tattoo on their butts.

Palm tree

More than likely straight out of Pinterest’s 101 girly tattoos you’ll wish you had this summer. I have one and even I don’t know what it means, some dude in a bar just kept shouting at me to “Get the palm tree!”. It seems to have just become some mark of the people that sort of surf and hang out in places like Bali without actually experiencing any of the Indonesian culture at all. But hey, we’re all a lot more attractive now that we’ve got tattoos right?

Ok you travel, cool. Do you think that all the people you’re meeting in these hostels while travelling do not also travel? Is this your way of branding yourself so you and your free spirited people can find each other and give each other egotistical high-fives and so that the normal people can immediately recognise you as better and more worldly than them? Also when have you ever, in all your impressive amounts of traveling, actually used either a map or a compass.

‘Adventure’

When the road ends, the journey begins, right dude? The definition of adventure is ‘an exciting or very unusual experience’ the irony in the act of thousands of people getting this same thing tattooed is fucking brilliant.

Glyphs

What the hell is a glyph anyway? Google glyph tattoos and you’ll find tables of symbols and their meaning with seemingly no origin. They have no historical background or set shapes. That arrangement of lines and dots on your arm that you think means strength only actually means that to the one guy who sat down, drew some shapes, gave them some meaning and posted the picture on pinterest. The miscellaneous section of one of these tables has a tiny wine glass which means ‘drinking’ followed by a small circle which means ‘baby’. What is this language? Where is it coming from? Can I make up a language? If we can all make up languages whenever we feel like it then are all languages arbitrary? Why am I even trying to be a writer if it’s all just arbitrary anyw…

The 5 Best Things You Can Do With Tomatoes

Tomatoes are an incredibly underrated food. A wise man once said “Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad”. Any food with a quote like that attached to it has to be good. Good enough that we’ve made a list of the five best things you can do with them.

Use Them To Freak Out People Who Hate Tomatoes

Apparently a lot of people hate tomatoes, which is weird. Really weird. And weirder still is that they only hate raw tomatoes, which doesn’t even make sense. Only annoying people despise only raw tomatoes specifically, but will still eat all other tomato related things. Annoying people are annoying to have around. How do you get rid of annoying raw tomato haters? Correct. With raw tomatoes, preferably high velocity, in the direction of their face. Enough said.

Make Gazpacho

Gazpacho, in the words of Lisa Simpson, is “tomato soup served ice cold!”, although if it’s cold blended fruit then arguably it could also just be a smoothie? But that’s besides the point. It’s generally eaten with hard boiled eggs or olives and instead of eating it with bread like you would normal soup, it’s already blended up in there. The whole concept is a little strange but it’s a typical Spanish dish and when in Rome and all.

Make Bloody Marys

Not only are bloody Marys brilliant because people use them as a way of curing hangovers with more alcohol, they’re also a really fucking classy way of doing it. Bloody Marys started back during the era of the Bright Young Things meaning people like Gatsby were the ones that started this tomatoey way of concealing the fact that they’re drinking vodka with their breakfast. Genius.

Paint Them In Still Life

Painting is supposed to work wonders for your mental health. It increases brain activity, emotional intelligence, mobility, all things we could probably work on after all those Bloody Marys. Tomatoes are probably one of the easiest things to start painting too right? They’re round red shapes, can’t be much to it.

Throw Them At People

Quite obviously the best option. Who doesn’t love food fights? And there’s a whole festival dedicated to throwing tomatoes at each other! The whole town turns into a sea of bolognesed people manically throwing squishy tomatoes at each other. Acidic juices and seeds flying everywhere. It’s a huge messy salsa of chaos and good times.
