How To Travel To Oktoberfest 2023

Getting to Munich’s Oktoberfest can be quite the ordeal, with all of the world’s beer lovers pining for a mega-pint of that delicious Bavarian nectar. But never fear, not only do we provide the best value for money and most fun Oktoberfest camping accommodation in Munich, we have also whipped up this handy little guide to travelling to Oktoberfest, so that you can join us in making the most of this first post-pandemic edition of the world’s biggest folk festival, and the original and by far best beer festival.

Travel to Oktoberfest Munich by plane

Travelling to Munich by plane is the gold standard in convenience and speed. By far your best option is to fly into Munich, and then simply ride the train from Munich’s international airport all the way downtown. The whole process is smooth, easy, and usually pretty cheap. BUT this isn’t an ordinary year, and prices are already rising, meaning that usually reasonable routes are filling fast and as such, prices are getting jacked. That said, there are still deals to be found, and we did a little search using Google’s amazing flight finding tool. These were the last minute deals in 2022, so get in earlier so you get them cheaper.

Oktoberfest flight prices from around Europe to Munich

There’s not much better than visa-free travel around Europe’s Schengen zone. We found flights from Dublin, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, Athens, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Krakow and Amsterdam for between €150 and €250 depending on when you fly. We didn’t search for all European cities, but we’d expect them to be in a similar ballpark.

Oktoberfest flight prices from London to Munich

Around €200 return for weekend trips, cheaper midweek. The Thursday before Oktoberfest starts (so two days before the beer halls open and when Stoketoberfest cracks open its open bar) there are flights for €180, but you’d want to snag them asap.

Oktoberfest flight prices from Australia to Munich

If you wanted to fly all the way from Down Under to Oktoberfest, we strongly recommend that you make a bigger trip out of it. That said, there are flights that will get you there the wednesday before the Oktoberfest opening ceremony for about $1,700 – or the price of a six pack in Sydney.

Oktoberfest flight prices from the USA and Canada to Munich

Flights from the east coast of the US to Munich are currently around $800 for dates around Oktoberfest. Add $200 if you’re flying from the west coast. Flights from Canada run a similar schedule, with the flights from Vancouver being a couple of hundred Canadian dollars more than those from Toronto, but you gotta account for that pesky exchange rate, eh.

Flying to Munich hints and tips

  • Try to fly outside of weekends to get the best rates, and from our research a couple of days before the official start of Oktoberfest, on the 16th of September – and take a day or two to explore Munich and our Stoketoberfest campsite.
  • Consider flying into cities near Munich and getting a train into the city. Trains from Nuremberg and Stuttgart are around as low as €12-€25 and will add an hour to your travel time, while flights into those cities are considerably cheaper.
  • If you’re flying from farther afield, why not make a trip of it, explore some other cities, and travel around by train into Munich. See the next section for our guide to train travel.

Travel To Oktoberfest By Train

If you’re lucky enough to already be in Europe, train travel to Munich for Oktoberfest can be a cheaper, slightly slower, more comfortable alternative to flying. Anywhere in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, France and surrounds will have cheap and fast train connections to Munich – we’re talking less than €100 return. We even found a €60 return trip from Rome! All of these trips are going to take less than six hours, which when you consider travelling to airports from the centre of town and vice versa, ain’t all that much of an inconvenience.

And once you get to Munich you’ll arrive a literal stone’s throw from the Oktoberfest fairgrounds, and a short metro ride to the Stoketoberfest campsite.

Also, it’s very ok to drink beer on European trains (for the most part, don’t quote us to the authorities if it’s not), so what better way to watch the European countryside slide by, while getting a little bit of a buzz on?

When looking for trains around Europe, we like using the German railways own website and search engine at bahn.de, because we just trust them to get it right. Bloody efficient lot that they are.

Travel To Oktoberfest By Bus

General rule of thumb here is to half the train ticket price and double the time required to make the journey. From many European cities, a bus is a very reasonable way to travel to Oktoberfest – particularly if you’re booking last minute. Buses in Europe are comfortable-enough affairs, safe and the highways they roll along wide, fast and full of German engineering travelling close to the speed of sound.

You can find bus times and prices with aggregator sites like Omio or Rome to Rio, or FlixBus seem to go everywhere, always.

If you’re a true fun-lover, Stoke Travel operates buses to Oktoberfest from cities like Budapest, Prague, Paris, Amsterdam/Brussels, London, Florence/Milan/Torino, Vienna, and Berlin. Check out our buses and prices here.

Travel To Oktoberfest By Car

Look, this is the world’s biggest beer festival so we don’t really recommend driving, BUT if you have access to a car – or enough people to justify hiring one – and a good designated driver system, then driving could be an option to get you to Munich, arriving in style and comfort on the autobahn. There are a few considerations to take when opting to drive:

  • German police are crazy for a alcohol breath test and drug swab – quadruply so during Oktoberfest – so take that into account, you wild little hedonists,
  • Petrol prices in Europe are skyrocketing, so you’re going to want to car pool,
  • The autobahn is wild, with Audis and Beemers and Mercs consistently tickling 200kms/h (120 miles) in the outer lane. Proceed with caution,
  • Parking might be an issue in a city with millions of visitors,
  • Stoke Travel does offer an option to arrive and sleep in your own van.

Also, you could consider ride sharing with apps like BlaBlaCar, hitchhiking, or even walking/cycling through Germany’s extensive trail networks, but if you’re going to do something like that then you’re already intrepid enough to get yourself to Munich without our help.

The Conclusion

As with any travel, the arithmetic that we have to do is: how convenient do I want/need my arrival to be VS how much am I willing to pay. Flying is by far the easiest and fastest way to arrive in Munich, but won’t be the cheapest. Train’s aren’t far behind – usually twice the time and half the cost – and are an excellent option if you’re starting your journey from nearby. Buses will again double time and halve costs.

Whatever you choose to do, you can always offset the cost by staying in Munich’s best value and most fun accommodation option, where for €65 a night you get not only somewhere to sleep, but brunch with bottomless mimosas, live music and DJs, a wild party in a festival wonderland, and the opportunity to meet 1000s of likeminded travellers and beer lovers from all over the world – and then hit the beer halls with them. See our Oktoberfest 2023 packages here.

We do recommend that you get everything in order ASAP, and lock in your trip, because it’s just going to get more expensive. This year’s event will sell out! So don’t get left snoozing. See you in Munich!

¿Cómo hacer surf si no tienes equilibrio?

Mejora tu postura corporal ¡Espalda recta!

Stoke Travel’s Running With Bulls FAQs

There’s so much to know about Pamplona’s San Fermin festival and its famous bull run, so we compiled this little list of bull running frequently asked questions. If you have more questions for us ask any of our expert running with the bulls guides at reception or the bar.

What’s The Schedule?

Stoke Travel’s buses for the opening ceremony leave at 8:30 and 10 and will drop you at the city bus station. They return from the same place to the campsite at 17:30, 18:30 & 22:00. Organise your bus tickets at reception.

The festivals begin at midday on the 6th, with the chupinazo in Pamplona’s town square. Some small fireworks will signal the beginning of the festival after the mayor and other dignitaries have blessed the festival. This is one of the craziest, most intriguing, human crushes you’ll ever be in. If you like being squeezed in with 1000s of people spraying sparkling wine in your face, then this is for you. Otherwise, stick to the main square where you can watch it on the big screen, partake in a sangria bukkake, penguin slide on the tiles, and otherwise play up. After that, the whole city erupts into a street party, and we wander around, find hidden plazas with live bands and DJs, drink more, dance and be merry until it’s time to return to camp for the campsite party.

Then from the 7th until the 14th there are bull runs at 8am (more info to follow) and finish in the bullfighting ring with “playful” younger bulls that enjoy tossing people around.. The buses from the campsite to Pamplona for the run leave at 5:30am and return at 11am. Again, organise your travel at reception.

Every night there are concerts and parties and the whole event climaxes on the 14th at midnight with a fireworks display. The buses from the campsite to the nighttime parties leave at 21:00 and return at 1:00 the following morning/night (1am).

If for whatever reason (too much sangria, too much getting lucky, too much ripping it on the dancefloor) you miss the buses, just jump in a taxi and take your drive of shame home. Their phone number is +34 680 87 22 00.

THe Bull Run starts at 8am every morning

Every year the encierro, or bull run, takes place every morning from the 7th until the 14th of July, at exactly 8am in the morning. You’ll know that the bulls have been released from their holding pen when you hear the cannon fire, and if you haven’t completely soiled your pants at that stage, it’s time to start running. The bull run should take around four minutes, unless a bull has been separated from the herd, in which case it will last longer on account of the chaos.

WHERE IS THE RUNNING WITH THE BULLS?

The running of the bulls begins in the bull pen on Calle Santo Domingo, just outside Pamplona’s old town, and continues for just over 800 metres to the city’s bullfighting ring. Pamplona is the capital of Navarra, an autonomous region of northern Spain, not far from the Pyrenees Mountains and the French border. Pamplona is a little over and hour from San Sebastian, about four-and-a-half hours from Barcelona, and a little less from Madrid.

Why do they run with bulls?

The reasons for the bull run are as different as there are runners. For many locals it’s a tradition that runs in the family, for some foreigners it’s seen as an incomparable adrenaline rush. The run takes place during the festival of San Fermin, Pamplona’s patron saint and first ever bishop, who we don’t think ever ran with any bulls…

How did the running of the bulls originate?

Running with bulls was a practical way of transport the animals from outside of town to the bull ring in the city’s centre. People would run in front of the bulls so the animals would follow them and not lose their way. At some point in history people joined the run, mostly young men trying to prove their bravery, then the tourists came, mostly inspired by Ernest Hemmingway’s depiction of the bull run in his novel Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises.

How many people have died running with the bulls?

Too many! But not as many as you’d think. Since they began keeping records in 1910 15 people have died, which isn’t that many when you consider the thousands who take part every year. The most recent death was in 2009 when a young runner from Madrid was gored in the neck. While Pamplona’s bull run is the most famous, similar events are held all over Spain each year, and it’s not uncommon for runners to die in other locations.

What does it mean to be gored to death?

Goring is when a bull’s horn or horns pierces your skin. It is the most common form of bull running injury. Every year numerous runners are gored, but as you just read, barely any die from their injuries.

How long does it take to run with the bulls?

The average time is around four minutes, but bull runs have been known to last up to half an hour! When a bull becomes separated from the pack it can stop running towards the bullring and start charging runners. At this point the bull run monitors will coax the bull with large sticks to try and encourage it to run to its destination.

How fast does a bull run?

The bulls run at around 24km/h. Usain Bolt runs at almost 45km/h. Over 100m. The bull run is 848.6m long, and not straight, smooth or free from obstacles. You shouldn’t go into the bull run expecting to run faster than the bulls for any great period of time. Just run in front of them for a while and then get out of the way. The most important thing is getting out of the way of the bulls, as opposed to running with them.

How fast is a cow?

We don’t know, but probably not as fast as a bull, but not much slower either! Cows would have a running pace similar to bulls so they can have a chance of escaping from them, if they need/want to.

How many bulls are used in the running of the bulls?

The usual configuration is six fighting bulls, eight oxen steers, identified by the bells around their necks, that are employed to keep the bulls in a group and a further running behind that an additional three steers to encourage any bulls that have broken from the pack to continue their run to the bull ring. This is repeated every day for the eight running days of Sanfermines.

How much does a bull weigh?

The bulls weigh between 500-600 kilograms, or more than 1300 pounds. Their horns are sharpened. They don’t like the look of you.

Are bulls colour blind?

They aren’t colourblind in general, but are colourblind to red. So don’t hesitate in throwing on the traditional red sash and neckerchief. When bulls charge a red rag their attracted to the movement, so maybe try and stay still if you don’t want to attract their attention (note: standing still in a bull run is not a great idea).

You will have to wear the official running of the bulls outfit.

White shirt, white pants, red neckerchief (or panuelo) and red sash. The whites pay homage to the butchers who were the first to lead the bulls running through the streets, the red neckerchief symbolises San Fermin who was beheaded by the French (and supposedly walked his head back to Pamplona). Butchers and headless bishops make for a pretty gruesome costume, but it does look pretty cool.

Existen 3 niveles, cóncavo bajo, medio y alto.

Of course during this pandemic only fools make predictions, but we’ve never pretended to not be fools. Cheerful, optimistic fools. But still, these aren’t predictions. These are official statements from the people who make the decisions. And so, we’re here to share with you the latest news about Oktoberfest and why it’s going to be ON!

21st February, 2022 – Oktoberfest Poster Competition Winner Announced

This is always the best indication that Oktoberfest will be on, with the Oktoberfest organisers and chief, Clemens Baumgärtner, choosing this hopeful image as the winner of the annual poster competition, hosted since 1952.

See the top three designs, here!

2nd February 2022 – Oktoberfest chief Clemens Baumgärtner confident Oktoberfest will ON!

Stating that a decision will be made at the beginning of May, the Oktoberfest chief has said that he’s confident that it will be on. From the article: “Oktoberfest boss Clemens Baumgärtner (45, CSU) when asked by BILD: “My gut tells me: the Oktoberfest will take place. With the 2G rule.” So for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered.”

Full article, here!

1st February 2022 – Springfest is confirmed ON!

In what is promising news for Oktoberfest fans, the spring manifestation of the event (colloquially known as Oktoberfest’s younger sibling or more correctly Fruhlingsfest in the native tongue) has been announced on the Munich city’s events page.

We always consider Springfest to be our bellwether event for determining if Oktoberfest will be on or not, and an opportunity for the organisers to trial health, safety and security measures in preparation for the bigger Oktoberfest event.

Don’t trust us? Get it from the horse’s mouth, here!

8th January 2022 – Oktoberfest organisers considering a summer event

Rather than have to cancel the event in September-October, some organisers are considering a summer event, but the general consensus is that we’ll be going ahead with the event in the traditional timeslot – just for vaccinated or recently recovered beer lovers.

Article, as per usual, here.

3rd January 2022 – Munich mayor is optimistic about Oktoberfest, says vaccine passports and electronic entry preferred to socially distanced event

Munich mayor, Dieter Reiter, has said that he is confident that Oktoberfest will go on, and will go on in a manner that we’re more accustomed to, without face masks and social distancing. From the article, “One thing that Reiter is sure of: When the Oktoberfest takes place, it will be a Oktoberfest as we know it from the past. There will be no ‘isolation or gaps in the tents’, according to the mayor in the AZ conversation. ‘In this respect, that Oktoberfest feeling can definitely arise. I would also like to have a little silver lining again that something like normality can be back in late summer 2022.’”

Here’s the whole story.

Coming Out Of The Pandemic

The “Roaring 20s” start in 2022!

Wasn’t that a pile of bullshit? Coming seemingly out of nowhere in March 2020 (we were turned back from the Andorra border with a bus full of skiers and boarders and schnapps lovers right when the world locked down) and hanging around for FAR too long, the COVID-19 pandemic was a serious meddler in our grand plans to continue ruling the European youth party travel (how specific!) scene.

Some 700 days and counting of not being able to run our festival campsites. Of restrictions on movement and the gathering of people. Of partying. Of all things very integral to Stoke Travel’s business model. Seven-fucking-hundred days of burning through our pathetic savings, of disappointing people who had trips booked with us, but most importantly 700 days of not hanging out with you legends and going to the world’s wildest festivals, loosest destinations – of living a life of leisure and pleasure and partying all night and most of the day.

Seven hundred days where we have barely squeezed ONE drop out of the juice of life, let alone every last drop

But we’re done with that, we’re back and from where we’re standing 2022 is looking RED HOT! We’ve just run two sold-out snow trips to Andorra with buses filled with absolute legends intent on challenging themselves on the slopes by day and in the bars by night (and by some of the day too). We’ll be taking 1000+ partiers to Sitges for Carnival, which is at pre-pandemic levels. Ibiza is open again and so our Spring Break trip there over Easter will be the wildest one yet (and that’s saying something).

And our bookings to date for trips like Springfest, San Vino, the San Sebastian Surf House, San Fermin, La Tomatina, Barcelona Boat Parties, and the big mumma of them all, Oktoberfest, are all at unprecedented levels for this time of the year, as some of these events have been confirmed ON for the first time in two years, and travellers are scratching their itchy feet with our epic early bird deals*.

So for now, while the pandemic clears and travellers get their nerve to make bookings back we’re going to hang onto the €1 deposit system for now. We know that it’s still spooky out there and that some people might be hesitant about putting down a more significant deposit. That’s cool, we understand and will keep our risk-free booking system going. We just want you to book a trip in 2022 travel with peace of mind, and we’d be honoured if you chose to book some trips with us.

Let’s fuck shit up together this year. Let’s squeeze every goddamn last drop out of every opportunity that presents itself to us. Now isn’t the time to um and ah and make prudent decisions. In 2022 we act on impulse. We only do the things that please us. We leave the pandemic in our rearview mirror and immerse ourselves in some low down, dirty dionysian good times.

Are you with us?

*Don’t tell accounts that we told ya, but the promo code for half-price Ultimate Oktoberfest packages (four nights for the price of two) is STOKETOBERFEST2022 and you can get our infamous open beer and sangria bar for FREE at Springfest with the promo code SPRINGBOOZE.

Let’s Talk Rebrands: An Open Letter From Gravy, Stoke Travel CMO

This feels like a terribly self-indulgent thing for me to do – you know, who cares about what the piddling CMO from a middling youth travel company has to say – but rebrands are momentous moments in a brand’s history – given their occurring only when a brand is making a pivot, and act as trail markers in the brand’s history – and as such deserve, if not demand, some explanation.

So here I am. Gravy. Stoke Travel’s first surf instructor back when we were Smashed Travel; brand manager from when we reinvented as Stoke back in 2008, and now as CMO I’m proud to present this V.3 iteration of Stoke Travel to you and to a new generation of young travellers, thrill seekers and hedonists.

So why the change? And why now?

One thing we’ve always cherished and cultivated is a strong brand identity. Something memorable for better or  worse. An honest youth travel brand. Cheeky – maybe sometimes a little crass, but always fun.

Due to our position as the upstart underdog brand, we’ve never been overly concerned about parents and partnerships, and this has allowed us to create a brand identity that really speaks to the experiences of young people travelling Europe. We’ve never had to completely ignore the sex, drugs and €2 baguettes reality that for many punctuates their exploration of the Old Continent; while we’ve never actively spruiked it – as this would be indecent, cringe and careless of us – we’ve been able to offer a little nudge and a wink to what travellers were encountering on the road.

And for that reason our previous logo made sense. For those of you unfamiliar with said logo, here it is in all of its kind of inappropriate glory.

Cheeky. Provocative. And yep, they’re my feet. The intimate details of how this came to be our logo aren’t necessary in this forum, but I can divulge that our first collection of tents couldn’t accommodate my full length (1.95m), and that an industrious surf camp manager/passionate photographer was up and cleaning the previous night’s party detritus and just so happened upon the visage of me and a bunk buddy stretching into the field, snapped the photo, and when we were developing the previous brand identity we decided that it would make for a perfect logo.

Its ability to make travellers look twice, provoke thought and conversation made it a memorable logo for us at that time, and it served us well as we made our way through our ratbag years. This was the time when it was our unstated aim to be banned from the advertising pages of TNT (London-based Australian and Kiwi expats magazine with a heavy focus on travel). To throw the most outrageous experiences at our festivals, destinations and campsites. Because to be the new guy, the upstart, we had to go over the top with our branding. Grab attention. Make sure that the audience knew that they’d find a good time with us.

And this worked! This era of scoundrel marketing saw us grow from having a surf camp in France to being a main player at Europe’s finest festivals; from hosting dozens of travellers at any given time to hosting thousands. We cemented our position as Europe’s number one festival travel company, appealing to an entire generation of travellers (or at least the most rambunctious subset amongst them).

Of course these strategies drew criticism, some deserved and some not, and as times and travellers changed it began to become clear that we had to move away from our overtly “blokey” brand culture. Despite having women steering the Stoke ship from an ownership level all the way to making up the majority of our on-site staff, there was no denying that Stoke Travel, with its copulating feet logo and predisposition to imbibe cheap beer at Europe’s wildest parties was always going to at least appear to be “for the lads, by the boys”.

And that’s not what we have always believed the brand to represent. We wanted to provoke and push limits, but not to appear exclusive. This most certainly didn’t fit with our future plans, when our in-brand mottos are to provide “Outrageous, Inclusive and Progressive Experiences”, and so we made the difficult decision to change a universally recognised logo, and with it the colour scheme and much of the content that had come to exemplify that chapter in our history.

Once the pandemic put a pause on travel for us, we used the time to explore our options for this rebrand. We knew that we wanted something light and funky, that exemplified the post-war years golden age of indulgent leisure – when people would pack their cases and jet off for a poolside week of drinking mai tais and dancing barefoot. Palm Springs influenced 50s Californian cool meets Biarritz in the 60s, or something like that.

With the fresh new main colour palette we developed a suite of colours and combinations to represent our trip and destination pillars: Barcelona, Surfing, Spanish Fiestas, Sailing the Mediterranean, Ibiza, Snow, Festivals Around the World, and of course Oktoberfest.

The logo we’re going for had the working title of Yabadaba-GO as we were working with The Swords’ Bros on design – two Australian brothers who, when they’re not fronting party rock band Tropical Zombie, have churned out some seriously mind-bending concepts for surf brands and music festivals alike. We went through some weird and wonderful designs before we settled on this jazzy jitterbug script. It carries the same cool that we’ve got with our new colour combinations.

With the wordmark logo we’re making sure that the Stoke Travel name is as legible and memorable as possible by putting it at centre stage, but we’re lacking the suggestiveness of the previous pair of post-porking pig trotters. So we’ve created something more aligned with our core business – a globe with us taking a greedy, moorish bite out of Europe – and teamed it with our new main slogan, Squeeze every last drop.

Squeeze every last drop out of your travels; squeeze every last drop out of your free time. Squeeze every last drop out of this post-pandemic life. We are fully aware that travel companies have less and less time with young travellers – and agree that it’s how it should be! Travellers now are more independent, tech savvy, have apps at their beck and call, can draw upon the boundless expanses of travel advice and experience available from bloggers and YouTubers and TikTockers and Instagrammers and probably not Facebookers.

So because we know that we are going to spend less time with young travellers we pledge to make sure that we’re squeezing as many experiences and connections into every waking moment that we have with them. That their time with us is spent meeting new and fascinating people from all over the world, experiencing Europe’s most wonderful festivals and destinations together, partying and dancing and learning and most importantly of all having as much fun as is humanly possible.

We’re drinking the juice of life and squeezing every last drop out of the bottle.

So that’s it. That’s the self-indulgent tale of where the brand has been, where it is as of today, and where it’s going. But we aren’t resting here. We never will. It’s just that we’re proud of where we are right now, how we got here, and excited to welcome a new generation of Stokies to Europe.
